Looking for the best cafes in Copenhagen actually worth visiting?

Copenhagen has one of the best coffees in Europe, and coffee here is much more than a quick caffeine stop — it’s a big part of everyday Danish life.

You can grab a cup of coffee almost anywhere in Copenhagen, but it’s worth making an effort to visit a few Danish speciality coffee cafés.

After living in Copenhagen and visiting cafés across different neighbourhoods, I have put together this list of cafés I’ve personally visited or would confidently recommend to friends visiting the city.

So, if you prioritise coffee on your Copenhagen trip, this guide is all you need.

Coffee Culture in Copenhagen

Danes are obsessed with coffee. Many locals start their day with a double espresso. My Danish friend once said, “Coffee is my version of water.”

Coffee is a big part of everyday life and is closely tied to the Danish concept of hygge.

In fact, Danes are among the world’s biggest coffee drinkers, averaging around 4 cups a day, so finding a good cup of coffee in Copenhagen is actually easier than you think.

You’ll notice that most Danish bakeries and restaurants also serve coffee, and it’s very common to grab a drink alongside your breakfast or lunch.

Speciality coffee is especially popular in Denmark. Expect to pay around 25-50 DKK for a cup of coffee, and credit cards are accepted everywhere.

Best Cafes in Copenhagen (Local’s Favourites)

1. Coffee Collective

If you’re trying coffee in Copenhagen for the first time, Coffee Collective is where I would send you. I’ve got a consistently good cup of coffee every time I go there.

Founded in 2007, this speciality coffee chain now has 9 locations across Copenhagen and works directly with coffee farmers while roasting its beans daily. It’s popular with both locals and visitors for a reason. If you’re not sure what to order, get the double espresso. It’s one of my favourites and is definitely worth trying.

2. Prolog Coffee Bar

Another place I would recommend if you want to experience Copenhagen’s speciality coffee culture. It’s a favourite among many locals, and after visiting, it’s easy to understand why.

With 4 locations across Copenhagen, Prolog has built a strong reputation for serving speciality coffee with skilled baristas.

They specialise in omni-roasting, a method that highlights the coffee bean’s natural flavours no matter how it is brewed. Their coffee also leans towards the lighter Nordic roast style, so expect brighter, fruitier, and cleaner flavours rather than a strong, dark roast. If that’s your type of coffee, head to Prolog.

3. April Coffee

April Coffee is a small, quality-focused coffee roastery rooted in Denmark. They only serve speciality coffee and canelé.

They use their own April Selection beans to make filter coffee, espresso, and milk-based espresso drinks. I have to say, their canelé is one of the best I’ve ever tasted in Copenhagen.

The coffee is carefully roasted with a medium roast profile, creating a balanced, sweet cup with strong flavour. I also really enjoyed chatting with the baristas, who explained the brewing process and the coffee.

4. La Cabra

Danish speciality coffee brands every coffee lover must visit. Originally from Aarhus, the company was founded in 2012 and has since expanded internationally.

La Cabra focuses on seasonal, high-quality coffee beans, so the selection changes throughout the year. The coffee at their Møntergade location is excellent. The café also has a minimalist Scandinavian design that creates a calm atmosphere

5. Riccos

For a cozy café with good quality coffee in Copenhagen. With 11 locations across Copenhagen, it’s a solid choice and a popular everyday coffee spot among Danes.

The beans are imported fresh, roasted in-house every week, and either donated to charity or discarded once they’re more than 10 days old. Their focus on freshness and quality is one of the reasons customers keep coming back, and it’s definitely a café I would happily revisit too.

6. ROAST coffee

Founded in 2014, this local speciality coffee brand roasts all of its coffee right here in Copenhagen and has 4 cafés across the city. The menu is simple, focusing mainly on quality coffee and a small selection of pastries.

Their flat white is a classic and one I’d definitely recommend. If you enjoy filter coffee, try a Chemex brew. They even offer coffee courses.

7. Impact Roasters

Best places to try Ethiopian coffee in Copenhagen. Their coffee beans are sourced from Ethiopia, often called the birthplace of coffee, and then roasted locally in Copenhagen. They have 5 of their own cafés, and you’ll also find their coffee served in other cafés around the city.

I also enjoyed the African-inspired décor, which gives the space its own character. They regularly host traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremonies and community events.

8. Original Coffee

With 25 locations across the city, there’s a good chance you’ll come across one during your trip. They have their own coffee roastery in Carlsberg Byen, where every bean is roasted, sorted, and quality-tested each week before being sent to their cafés.

They focus on sourcing clean, well-sorted, and consistent beans that meet their quality standard, and you can really taste the effort in every cup.

Besides coffee, they also serve breakfast and pastries, and I really like their vegan options. I visit quite often when I want to get some work done on my laptop while enjoying a good cup of coffee in a relaxed atmosphere.

9. Kafferiet

A cosy local café with 2 locations in Copenhagen, serving coffee since 1998. Their motto is “Slow Coffee,” which reflects their double-roasting process and their focus on brewing coffee to perfection rather than rushing it.

While coffee is naturally the star here, I have to mention their matcha, which I absolutely loved. One of the cute cafes in Copenhagen with aesthetic interiors that make you want to slow down and stay a little longer.

10. Andersen & Maillard

Combination of a coffee roastery, café, and bakery. The café has a beautiful Scandinavian minimalist design that feels very Copenhagen, which I like.

They are known for their excellent filter coffee, black coffee, and milk-based coffee drinks. Their pastries are very popular, and most people come here for the combination of freshly baked pastry and high-quality coffee.

Many cafés in Copenhagen are quite small and can get busy, especially during breakfast and weekends, so don’t be surprised if you have to queue for a few minutes.

Best Cafes in Copenhagen for Breakfast (For Coffee Lovers)

Here are some of the cafés that pair a good breakfast with a proper cup of speciality coffee. I’ve included places that I genuinely enjoy and would happily revisit myself.

These cafés serve freshly baked pastries, breakfast and brunch, alongside quality coffee.

11. The Artisan Bakery

A part of Andersen & Maillard and one of the cool cafes in Copenhagen, if you want breakfast, great speciality coffee, and a hygge atmosphere by The Lakes of Copenhagen.

They freshly roast their own speciality coffee in-store in small batches using beans sourced from Peru. I also like that they cater to different tastes, whether you prefer light, medium, or dark roasts. Their food menu is small, but don’t miss their homemade ginger ale, kombucha, and espresso tonic.

12. 20 Grams

An antique-style speciality coffee shop with breakfast, brunch, and desserts. 2 locations in Copenhagen.

Breakfast and brunch are served until 15:00. They also offer vegan and vegetarian options. And I have to mention their cheesecake, my favourite in all of Copenhagen.

13. Darcy Café

Darcy Café is a lovely multi-roaster coffee shop with 2 locations in Copenhagen and a great cafe for early breakfast, as it opens at 7:30 AM. You’ll easily recognise it by its dark blue corner café design with both indoor and outdoor seating.

The cafe works for everyone – to have breakfast, work on your laptop, study, or simply enjoy a quiet coffee, the atmosphere feels relaxed and welcoming. Everything on the food menu costs less than 100 DKK.

14. Sonny

With 2 locations in Copenhagen, it’s a popular spot for a relaxed breakfast with really good coffee. Their coffee comes from La Cabra, one of Denmark’s best-known speciality coffee roasters, and Sonny even has its own signature blend using Brazilian natural washed beans.

They serve homemade breakfast, lunch, and home-baked cakes, along with speciality coffee, tea, and cold drinks. They also offer gluten-free and vegan options. The café opens at 8:30 AM.

Best Cafes to Work in Copenhagen

Many cafés in Copenhagen are laptop-friendly. Coffee Collective, Original Coffee, and Prolog all offer free Wi-Fi, and it’s common to see freelancers sitting with their laptops and students studying or reading.

I’ve included a few more cafes with a comfortable atmosphere, good coffee, and enough space to settle in without feeling rushed.

15. Espresso House

The largest coffee chain in the Nordics. Originally founded in Lund, Sweden, it has grown to more than 500 cafés across the Nordic countries and Germany. All of their coffee beans are roasted at their own facility in Sweden.

It’s a great place to work remotely, read a book, or just sit for a while. Besides coffee, they also serve breakfast, pastries, sandwiches, and plenty of hot and cold drinks.

16. Democratic Coffee

Democratic Coffee is a good cafe to work in Copenhagen. It’s located inside Copenhagen’s Main Library, so the atmosphere is naturally quiet and perfect for getting things done.

The menu is simple with quality coffee and pastries, but the real advantage is that you can buy a coffee and then move into the library’s designated lounge areas to work peacefully for a few hours.

If you need a productive space for remote work, studying, reading, or answering emails, this is one of the best places to do it. My favourite spot is the stools facing the large windows.

Starbucks and 7-Eleven Coffee Machine

Starbucks is mostly popular with tourists rather than locals. Many Danes prefer independent cafés and speciality coffee shops instead.

On busy mornings, it’s actually quite common to see people grabbing a coffee from the 7-Eleven coffee machines. It may not be the best coffee in Copenhagen, but it’s one of the cheapest and most convenient options when you’re in a hurry and just need a quick coffee to go.

Final Thoughts: Best Cafes in Copenhagen for Coffee Lovers

If you’re visiting Copenhagen for the first time, I’d suggest starting with Coffee Collective. It’s one of the city’s most well-known coffee shops for a reason.

That said, don’t be afraid to step into independent, non-chain cafés too, as they are often just as good.

No matter where you go, Denmark’s coffee culture is definitely worth experiencing.

And if you end up loving my favourite coffee shops list, I’m sure you’ll also enjoy the best breakfast restaurants in Copenhagen. Check it out!
