Looking for the best breakfast in Copenhagen, but not sure where to go?

Copenhagen has incredible breakfast and brunch places, including cafés, bakeries, and restaurants across the city.

After living in Copenhagen and trying different breakfasts over the years, I’ve discovered places that I genuinely return to and confidently recommend to friends and family visiting the city.

From traditional Danish breakfasts and freshly baked pastries to brunch plates and speciality coffee, Copenhagen offers something for every taste.

I’ve put together this list to help you find the best breakfast places in Copenhagen. If you love starting your day with good food and a great atmosphere, you’re in the right place.

Traditional Danish Breakfasts

Traditional Danish breakfasts are usually very simple.

Danish BMO - Rundstykkeror round bun with butter and cheese along with a cup of coffee
Danish BMO
  1. Many Danes eat BMO and coffee for breakfast. BMO stands for bolle med ost, which translates to bun with cheese. It’s a freshly baked morning bun called Rundstykker, served with butter and cheese. They also eat it with sourdough or rye bread.
Pair it with a cup of coffee, and you’ll be having a very local breakfast experience.
  2. Morgenmadplade (Danish Breakfast Plate) – It usually includes a mix of fresh bread, often rye bread or a sourdough bun, butter, whipped cheese, soft-boiled eggs, yoghurt, fruit jam, and of course, a cup of coffee. Some cafés may also add seasonal fruit or a small sweet treat.
  3. Danes also eat oatmeal or porridge for breakfast.

Over the years, breakfast habits have changed, particularly in cities. While simple bread and coffee are still common, many people now opt for healthier choices such as porridge, smoothie bowls, yoghurt, and protein-rich breakfasts. You’ll see a mix of both traditional and modern breakfast habits across the city.

If you’re visiting Copenhagen for the first time, I highly recommend trying a traditional local breakfast at least once.

Best Breakfast Restaurants and Cafes in Copenhagen You’ll Love

1. Grød

My favourite place for a healthy breakfast in Copenhagen. I never thought I would be recommending a porridge restaurant, but after eating here, I realised even a simple porridge can be incredibly tasty.

This restaurant opens early at 7 AM, and the breakfast menu is served until 17:00. With 8 locations across Copenhagen, it’s easy to find one nearby.

They serve oatmeal bowls, smoothie bowls, salads, and protein bowls with really good toppings, and most dishes cost less than 100 DKK. The portions are generous and satisfying after a morning workout or a long walk around the city. For a healthy and affordable breakfast in Copenhagen, I highly recommend Grød.

2. Lille Bakery

The locals’ favourite, and you can tell by the number of regulars who come here. It gets busy as soon as it opens at 8 AM, and breakfast is served until sold out.

Located in Refshaleøen, this bakery and eatery is especially known for its breakfast and brunch. Their sourdough bread and their BMO (bun with cheese and butter) are amazing. I love the atmosphere here. The food is fresh, and the quality is consistently good. There is both indoor and outdoor seating for a lovely morning start to the day.

3. Wulff & Konstali

A popular brunch restaurant in Copenhagen, which is spread across 10 locations in Copenhagen.

It serves breakfast with an interesting build-your-own brunch concept. You create your own brunch by choosing 5 or 7 small dishes from more than 20 different options. Brunch costs 168 DKK for 5 dishes or 198 DKK for 7 dishes and is served from 8 AM to 15:00. Booking a table online is a very good idea.

They also have a separate breakfast menu with pastries, smoothie bowls, organic skyr with granola, and hot and cold drinks. The Early Bird Breakfast is available on weekdays from 8 AM to 9 AM for 75 DKK.

4. The Union Kitchen

A popular breakfast and brunch spot with 5 locations across Copenhagen. It is one of the few restaurants open for breakfast around Nyhavn, so it gets busy quickly. I highly recommend booking a table in advance.

Although a bit expensive, I love their wholesome breakfast plate. They also serve coffee, cocktails, falafel, waffles, burgers, and other international dishes. If you’re travelling with family or a group where everyone wants something different, head to the Union Kitchen.

5. Ø12 Coffee & Eatery

A breakfast restaurant I would happily go back to again and again. With 3 locations across Copenhagen and opening early at 7 AM, it’s a great place with comfort food and a relaxed Scandinavian vibe. The food presentation is beautiful, and the staff are genuinely friendly.

I would tell you not to miss the Eggs Benedict. The menu also includes porridge, pancakes, burgers, shakshuka, and plenty of other dishes. Although popular, there is no need to reserve.

6. Mormors

Mormors is a must-visit cozy Danish cafe. The name Mormor translates to grandmother. It opens at 8:30 AM and is the best breakfast cafe for families with kids.

The interior is filled with dolls, antiques, and vintage decorations of old Copenhagen and Danish history. The atmosphere feels warm and very hyggelig. On the menu, you’ll find homemade pastries, sandwiches, cakes, rum balls, cookies, muffins, smoothies, coffee, and alcoholic drinks.

7. Next Door Cafe

Affordable breakfast cafe in Copenhagen. Everything on the menu costs less than 100 DKK. I love their muesli and the pancakes. They also serve delicious homemade buns.

It has a relaxed communal vibe. You’ll see a mix of people on dates, students working on their laptops, and friends catching up over coffee. Add in the good music, eclectic décor, and tables decorated with notes from previous visitors, and it feels like a place full of life.

8. 20 Grams

A cafe that combines Danish speciality coffee with breakfast or brunch. 2 locations in Copenhagen.

They serve breakfast and brunch every day from 9 AM to 15:00, along with sourdough sandwiches, waffles, pastries, coffee, and other drinks. They also have set breakfast and brunch menus, plus vegan and vegetarian options. I especially love their cheesecake, the best in Copenhagen.

9. The Living Room

Located near Next Door Café and the University of Copenhagen, it’s a popular spot for students and remote workers during the day, transforming into a hangout spot in the evening.

They open at 9 AM, and breakfast is served until 13:00. The menu includes salads, sandwiches, omelettes, French toast, coffee, and other drinks. I love their smoothies.

The seating is comfortable with sofas. The food is made with fresh ingredients, and the flavours are really good. It’s the kind of place that works equally well for good food, catching up with friends, or spending a couple of hours on your laptop or book.

10. Mad & Kaffe

Best brunch restaurant in Copenhagen. With 4 locations across the city, it’s very popular, so I highly recommend booking a table in advance to avoid long wait times.

The concept is that, from the menu, tick off 3, 5, or 7 dishes to build your own brunch plate. Choose your serving size based on your appetite: enjoy three dishes for 120 DKK, five dishes for 160 DKK, or seven dishes for 190 DKK.

There are plenty of options to choose from, including smoothie bowls, cakes, eggs, bacon, pastries, and greens, so it’s easy to customise your meal. I honestly love this idea because you get to try a little bit of everything. They also serve organic juices, coffee, and other drinks for an extra cost. If you’re visiting Copenhagen for the first time, this is a brunch experience I would definitely recommend.

Food Markets in Copenhagen for Breakfast and Brunch

Food markets are also great breakfast places in Copenhagen. They are a good option if you want to try both Danish and international cuisines all in one place without spending too much.

At TorvehallerneKBH, places like Coffee Collective, Albatross & Venner, Fresh Market, Grød, and Patisserie Marie France open earlier in the day and are perfect for coffee, pastries, and breakfast.

On the other hand, Reffen, Broens, and Tivoli Food Hall usually open after 11 AM. I prefer visiting these food markets for late brunch or lunch when everything is open.

Breakfast in Copenhagen Bakeries

I have had breakfast in a lot of bakeries across Copenhagen. In fact, many of them open earlier than cafés, often around 7 AM.

Places like Buka, Juno, and Andersen & Maillard are very popular and loved by both locals and tourists. Most bakeries serve great coffee, fresh juices, pastries, and simple breakfast options, usually with a small seating area.

As you already know, a typical Danish breakfast is often a BMO (bun with cheese and butter) or a pastry with a cup of coffee.

Coffee Cafes in Copenhagen

Coffee cafés are also a great option for breakfast in Copenhagen. There are plenty of lovely cafés that specialise in Danish speciality coffee alongside breakfast pastries.

Coffee Collective is a solid choice that opens early in the morning. I have a separate guide with all my favourite coffee shops in Copenhagen, so make sure to check that out.

Other Breakfast & Brunch Places in Copenhagen

Seks, Sidecar, Social Brew, Apotek 57, and Atelier September are also great places that serve good breakfast and brunch. If you’re around these restaurants, it’s definitely worth stopping by.

Vegan Breakfast in Copenhagen

Finding a vegan breakfast in Copenhagen is not challenging.

Many cafés across the city now offer plant-based breakfast and vegan brunch dishes alongside their regular menus.

All of the places listed below have vegan options available. Even if you’re not vegan, I still recommend trying these.

  • Mad & Kaffe
  • Grød
  • 42Raw
  • Café Feel Good
  • Landbageriet – Danish bakery with Vegan options.

Bed and Breakfast in Copenhagen

Most hotels in Copenhagen offer complimentary breakfast for in-house guests. I actually recommend making use of it because hotel breakfast buffets in Denmark are usually very good.

For some of the best Danish breakfast buffets in Copenhagen, I would recommend Admiral Hotel, Scandic Copenhagen, NH Collection Copenhagen, Hotel Kong Arthur, and Tivoli Hotel.

A hotel breakfast buffet is honestly one of the easiest ways to experience a traditional Danish breakfast.

Final Thoughts: Best Breakfast in Copenhagen

The best mornings start with slowing down, enjoying a good cup of coffee, and treating yourself to freshly baked pastries or a delicious breakfast plate.

My favourite of all is Wulff & Konstali. I’m sure you will find your favourite breakfast place during your trip.

And if you’re staying in Copenhagen for a few days, don’t limit yourself to just one spot. Try a few different cafés and bakeries because each one offers a unique experience.
