What is the Juletræ Lighting Event?
Juletræ or Christmas tree lighting is an annual Danish tradition that has been around for over a century.
The locals and visitors of all ages gather to watch the first official lighting of Denmark’s biggest Christmas tree, right in front of the iconic City Hall building or Rådhuspladsen in the heart of Copenhagen city.
The natural tree, often towering up to 20 meters, is beautifully decorated with over 800 illuminated lights and over 100 traditional braided Christmas hearts (known as “Julehjerter”).

Christmas Tree Lighting Event Date
The Copenhagen Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony at City Hall Square or Rådhushaven takes place on the first Advent Sunday. In 2025, it occurs on Sunday, November 30th.
Did you know? The first Christmas tree lighting in Denmark took place in the town square of Copenhagen in 1914.
Christmas Tree Lighting Event Schedule
- 15:00 – The festive Christmas parade kicks off from Nyhavn and marches through the Strøget shopping street. The Father Christmas and elf children take part in the parade along with the capital’s Emergency services.
- 15:45 – Arrive at Rådhuspladsen or City Hall Square and hand out sweets to the children near the Christmas tree. The Copenhagen Municipality school orchestra performs Christmas carols.
- 16:00 – The Santa Claus or Julemanden climbs the fire truck, and the ladder is lifted to reach the Christmas tree top. The Lord Mayor delivers a speech in Danish, accompanied by a countdown from 10, after which the lights are switched on.
The Christmas parade begins at 15:00, and the Christmas tree lighting ceremony takes place from 16:00 to 17:00.
Christmas Parade and Juletræ Lighting Event: How is it Celebrated?
Every year, the Christmas parade starts from Nyhavn and goes through the busy Strøget shopping street, and ends at Rådhuspladsen (City Hall Square).
You’ll see girls, drumming and playing instruments, marching, while the Julemanden (Santa Claus) sits on a fire truck, waving to everyone along the way.
Only the girls or elf kids are seen marching; the rest, like the emergency services and other vehicles, roll along behind.

The City Hall Square at the center of Copenhagen is where everyone gathers, waiting for the big moment—the lighting of the huge 20 m decorated Christmas tree, all ready to shine.
There’s a real sense of community in the air, as everyone comes together for this beloved annual tradition.

A live choir and orchestra create a buzz as Julemanden and the rest of the parade make their way closer.
When Julemanden arrives, he hands out chocolates to the kids. As he makes his way to the tree, he waves to the crowd, bringing smiles and excitement to everyone watching.

Right as the sun starts to set, after a quick speech from the Lord Mayor, everyone counts down together. On the count of “one”, Julemanden waves his magic wand, there’s a big spark (cracker bursts from the wand), and the tree lights up.
The cheers of the crowd and the music fill the square. It’s an awesome way to kick off Christmas in Copenhagen.
The Christmas tree stands proudly at City Hall Square throughout December and is lit every evening.

And if you’re looking for a Copenhagen Christmas parade, the Christmas Parade at Amagerbrogade is an amazing experience and shouldn’t be missed.
Christmas Tree Lighting Event in Other Cities of Denmark
Just like in Copenhagen, other major cities like Aarhus, Odense, and Aalborg also have giant Christmas trees lit up in their city centers.
How to Dress for the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony
December in Copenhagen is quite cold, so be sure to layer up! Since this event is outdoors and you’ll likely be there for over an hour, dress warmly—especially if you’re bringing the kids.
A little preparation and knowing how to dress during winter goes a long way in making the experience comfortable and enjoyable!
