Looking for the best places to see Christmas lights in Copenhagen? You have come to the right place.

As the holiday season approaches, Copenhagen transforms into a winter wonderland with all the lights and decorations. But with so many places to explore, it’s hard to know where to start.

Fret not, I’ve wandered through the streets of Copenhagen enough to know exactly where you’ll find the best Christmas lights.

I’ll guide you through the must-see light displays and share my personal recommendations for an ultimate Christmas vibe in Copenhagen.

Come, let’s explore together!

1. Tivoli Gardens

Visiting Tivoli Gardens during Christmas is like stepping into a holiday postcard. The entire park is shimmering with millions of Christmas lights. A gigantic Christmas tree is placed right in the heart of the gardens, and about 1,000 beautifully decorated trees spread throughout.

As you stroll, you’ll notice over 60,000 ornaments hanging on the trees. It’s like every corner of Tivoli is sparkling with festive cheer! And once it gets dark, even the rides light up in all their glory, making the whole park glow with Christmas lights and decorations.

Trust me, you won’t want to miss the view from the Golden Tower – the entire Tivoli Garden looks like a sea of lights from up there!

Nimb, the 5-star hotel inside Tivoli is beautifully lit up, adding to the magic. And if that wasn’t enough, special Christmas shows are happening all around, plus you’ll get to see Julemanden (Santa Claus)! I highly recommend spending an evening here—it’s pure Christmas magic.

Also, note that Tivoli Gardens requires a mandatory entry ticket and an additional ticket for rides. However, a Copenhagen Card gives you free access to the park, to capture the Christmas decorations and lights.

2. Copenhagen Christmas Markets

Every year, from mid-November to December, seven different Christmas markets pop up in Copenhagen, each with a unique vibe. I never miss a chance to visit these markets, especially after sunset when the lights come alive and the markets are in full swing.

The markets are filled with cozy wooden stalls lit with vibrant colors and festive decorations. You’ll find Christmas trees twinkling in every corner, along with fun touches like polar bears, reindeer, and even dressed-up Santas.

I wander around sipping the Gløgg, mulled wine in hand, admiring the decorations and soaking in the atmosphere. There’s something truly special about the way Denmark celebrates Christmas and the Christmas markets are the perfect place to feel it. You don’t want to miss these markets when you’re here. It’s a must-do winter activity in Copenhagen!

3. Nyhavn

Nyhavn during Christmas is an absolute dream! The charming harbor greets you with beautifully decorated restaurants, each trying to outdo the other with their holiday displays.

The boats parked at the canal and the colorful buildings that Nyhavn is famous for look even more magical during this time of year, with lights reflecting off the water—it’s such a beautiful sight to behold.

Walk along the Nyhavn Christmas market’s decorated stalls that sell everything from handmade crafts to warm delicious Danish Christmas treats.

I love visiting Nyhavn during Christmas—the festive vibe, the Christmas lights, the decors, and the charming market make it an essential stop in Copenhagen during the season!

If you’re lucky to visit Nyhavn during the Santa Lucia parade, you’re in for an even bigger treat. The parade makes a quick stop at the Nyhavn canal, and seeing the boats decorated with lights glide through the water makes Nyhavn even more magical.

4. Kongens Nytrov

Just a short walk from Nyhavn will take you to the Kongens Nytrov Square, a popular landmark that transforms into a dreamy land with its Christmas market. I always enjoy wandering around the market stalls, picking up unique gifts, and enjoying the holiday cheer.

The two iconic buildings at Kongens Nytrov — Magasin Du Nord and Hotel D’Angleterr are illuminated with sparkling Christmas lights. The display at Hotel D’Angleterre is particularly breathtaking.

At Kongens Nytrov, the lights seem to surround you from every angle in the square.

5. Streets of Copenhagen

The best way to experience the magical Christmas vibe in Copenhagen’s city center is by simply walking. Every street is filled with festive lights and decorations during the season, and as someone who loves to explore on foot, I can confidently say that it’s a treat for the senses.

Below is the list of Copenhagen streets decorated with Christmas lights.

One of my favorite spots to stroll is the iconic Strøget Shopping Street. As you walk along the streets, you’ll notice red hearts and stars hanging between the buildings decorated with festive greenery. Every shop goes all out with Christmas decor, with many featuring a Christmas tree at the entrance.

From Kongens Nytorv to Amagertorv, where you’ll find the famous Stork Fountain, the Christmas atmosphere is undeniable. Musicians often perform in the open streets, adding extra joy. Clos to Amagertorv, you’ll find the cozy Højbro Plads Christmas market, inviting you to indulge in the holiday spirit.

And don’t stop there—make your way to Købmagergadea and Kultorvet. Every corner has something merry, and decorations at Gråbrødretorv will leave you in awe. For me, these streets are the heart of Copenhagen’s Christmas charm.

Of all, the street with the most Christmas lights-lit is the Kronprinsensgade.

6. City Hall Square

Copenhagen’s City Hall Square (Rådhuspladsen) is home to Denmark’s largest Christmas tree.

On the first Sunday of Advent, the tree-lighting event starts with a festive parade and lively Christmas music. I watched this Danish Christmas tradition last year, though be warned—it draws quite a crowd!

While the square may not be as richly decorated as other parts of the city, the impressive giant Christmas tree (Juletræ) is definitely worth the stop.

7. Copenhagen Zoo

Copenhagen Zoo is one of my favorite spots to enjoy Christmas lights in Copenhagen!

The trees are wrapped in sparkling lights and even during the day, the decorations are up. You’ll see glowing figures of animals like reindeer and wolves, similar to the lit-up reindeer you spot in Kongens Nytorv.

The Copenhagen Zoo Tower, corridors, and wooden houses are all adorned with festive lights and decorations, making it a fairyland.

There’s even a Christmas market (Julmarked) inside the zoo, which adds to the charm. For me, it’s the perfect blend of nature, holiday cheer, and festive fun.

Also, note that an entry fee is mandatory to venture inside the Copenhagen Zoo, even to witness the Christmas lights. However, enjoy free entry with the Copenhagen Card.
